The making of RWHaN
An afternoon in 2024, me and Helge took a walk along Akerselva, a river that runs through Oslo. We talked about a boardgame that we planned to make. A rather ambitious project with multiple figures, and complicated rules. While we talked another set of simpler rules formed. We sat down at a café called Godt Brød (good bread) at Nydalen and started drawing ideas to this new game. I have of course saved our first drawings on a napkin in the hope that this would turn into a big hit some day.
As soon as we got home, we started developing our new little game that we had already named “Rebecca Walks Home at Night”. We started with a mock-up version that was more or less playable at once. After some slight changes to the rules, it ran quite smoothly. As we both do painting classes every Monday, we felt it was natural for our game to be hand painted (yes, we tried digital art, but it did NOT work out).
We planned for the game to include miniatures from the start, so Helge began work on them. When all the cards and tiles were painted, we digitalized everything and used the powerful tool Power Point to put everything together. The rulebook and cards are all done in Power Point.
When our digital versions of the game were done, we found ourselves a print shop in Oslo (that’s why everything is so expensive!). The print shop, called Konsis, were great and had a lot of ideas about paper quality and box options. We ordered a few test copies to get an idea about the final product. All miniatures for the game are cast in a corner of our living room, it turned in to a proper factory for quite a while. Last step in our journey was to get the game out to other people, so we launched a Kickstarter campaign, where we ended up with an impressive 100 backers!
Now we are planning a re-launch of the game and for this we have bought 600 VHS tapes that are stored in big piles in our basement.
Re-launch and new expansion will be released in 2026!
Cheers,
Rebecca
